Four of Cups

The Four of Cups represents emotional withdrawal, the inability to see the gifts being offered because we're focused on what we don't have. The three cups before him should be enough—three is a number of completion—but he sees only lack. Meanwhile, the fourth cup appears from the cloud, a divine offering that goes unnoticed. This is the card of taking things for granted, of depression that blinds us to possibility, of the spiritual emptiness that comes when we stop engaging with life. The figure sits under a tree like the Buddha, but where the Buddha found enlightenment, this figure finds only boredom. He has retreated into himself, and his retreat has become a prison. This card asks: What are you refusing to see? What opportunities are being offered that you're ignoring? It reminds us that gratitude is not a feeling but a practice, and that sometimes the universe's gifts require us to look up from our discontent.
