Court Cards in Tarot
Understanding the royal family
Court cards baffle many readers. Are they people? Energy? Aspects of self? Yes to all. The 16 court cards (Page, Knight, Queen, King in each suit) represent different manifestations of their suit's energy. Here's how to read them confidently.
The Four Ranks
Pages - The Messengers
Youth, beginnings, messages, curiosity. Pages represent the spark of their suit—the initial impulse. They're students, beginners, or news coming your way. Open, eager, not yet matured.
Knights - The Actors
Movement, action, pursuit, extremes. Knights are in motion—chasing, charging, sometimes recklessly. They represent the active phase of their suit. Driven, focused, possibly obsessive.
Queens - The Masters
Mastery through feeling, intuition, nurturing. Queens embody their suit from within. They understand deeply and express naturally. Mature, powerful, emotionally intelligent.
Kings - The Authorities
Mastery through action, authority, leadership. Kings command their suit externally. They direct, control, and manifest. Mature, powerful, commanding respect.
The Four Suits
Wands Court: Passion, energy, creativity, ambition. The fiery personalities. Bold, impulsive, inspiring.
Cups Court: Emotions, relationships, intuition, creativity. The water personalities. Sensitive, loving, artistic.
Swords Court: Intellect, communication, conflict, truth. The air personalities. Sharp, analytical, sometimes cutting.
Pentacles Court: Money, work, body, material world. The earth personalities. Practical, reliable, grounded.
Court Cards as People
Traditionally, court cards represent people in your life or yourself. For personal readings:
- Physical traits: Wands = red hair/fair skin, Cups = light hair/fair, Swords = dark hair/dark eyes, Pentacles = dark hair/dark complexion
- Age: Pages = children/young adults, Knights = young adults, Queens = mature women, Kings = mature men
- Personality: The suit indicates their nature
These correspondences are guidelines, not rules. Modern readings often ignore physical traits and focus on energy instead.
Court Cards as Energy
More usefully, court cards represent energies or approaches:
- Page of Wands: New creative idea, beginning a passion project
- Knight of Cups: Pursuing love romantically, following your heart
- Queen of Swords: Thinking clearly, setting boundaries, speaking truth
- King of Pentacles: Financial mastery, material success, stability
Ask: What energy is this card representing? Is it an approach I should take? A quality I need? A person embodying this energy?
Court cards ask you to embody their energy. They're not just describing situations—they're inviting you to act. A Knight challenges you to move. A Queen asks you to feel. A King commands you to take charge.
Reversed Court Cards
Reversed court cards indicate blocked or distorted energy:
- Page reversed: Immature expression, false starts, blocked messages
- Knight reversed: Recklessness, obsession, action without direction
- Queen reversed: Emotional manipulation, repression, coldness
- King reversed: Tyranny, abuse of power, weakness disguised as strength
Reading Tips
- Multiple court cards: Many people involved, or different aspects of yourself in tension
- Court cards dominate: Relationships and personalities are central to the reading
- No court cards: The situation is about circumstances, not people
- Page then Knight then Queen/King: Evolution through the suit's energy
Practice Exercise
Pull one court card daily. Ask:
- What energy does this card represent?
- Where in my life am I being invited to embody this?
- What would it look like to express this energy today?
Over time, you'll develop intuitive understanding of each court card and recognize when they appear for you.
